Sepp Hell was born in Innsbruck, Austria, and studied trumpet at the conservatory there. In 1943, he joined the Innsbruck Symphony, and in 1960 he became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He was named a professor at the Vienna Conservatory in 1970.
